Consumers are getting poorer and poorer
People always say that the rich are getting richer. And the poor are getting poorer…
But it misses an important point. It misses the fact why people got rich or successful in the first place.
And it’s because they created things.
You don’t get rich or successful by working for someone. Well, maybe 0.01% of the people will. But most of us will keep chasing the carrot for our entire lives.
The only way to get there, to get that carrot is to create things.
But if you stay a consumer and consume all the time, if you only buy, read or listen to other people’s stuff, then you’ll never be able to make it.
Here’s the truth…
Creators are and will get richer and richer.
And consumers, people who only consume stuff, are and will get poorer and poorer.
What’s so great about this is the fact that today everybody can be a producer. No matter where you’re from. Or where you live. But almost no one will have the guts and the persistence to keep creating stuff until it works out. Most people just quit. Or don’t even start.
Sure, some people might post an update or two on Twitter, Medium or wherever once every few weeks. But most of you will stop doing it. Sooner or later. Most people will just give up.
But even more importantly, people seem to ignore the simply fact that just putting your stuff out there doesn’t work. No matter how good it is. What’s even more important is to promote your stuff. To build an audience.
So how do you build an audience? That’s up to you to find out.
But here’s what won’t help you to build an audience.
Posting once or twice a week won’t help anybody. No one will even notice. Because everybody can do that. And when you’re doing what everybody can do, then no one will notice. It’s that simple.
To stand out you’ve gotta do what no one else is doing. You’ve gotta show up more often than anybody else. You’ve gotta stay when everybody else already went home. You’ve gotta be creative. You’ve gotta be willing to experiment. Until you find something that works for you.
Sure, creating things is tough. And there’s no guarantee that it will ever work out. And there’s no recipe for it. There’s no guidebook to follow. There’s no map.
It took me three years to get a tiny little bit of traction. And the only reason why I got that tiny little bit of traction was because one year ago I decided to publish one article every day. And that’s what I’ve done ever since.
I decided to do something that most people would never do. I’ve decided to write and publish one article every single day. And because I was already writing and publishing one article a day I thought I could also write and publish a book in 30 days.
Something most people would never do. After all, I was already writing one article a day. So I did write and publish that book in 30 days. You can read the whole book here on Medium.
So whenever you feel like consuming, reading, buying or what not, why not invest that time into creating something instead?
Just think about it. Instead of reading this article for 5 minutes or so you could have written and published your own article.
And that’s some really powerful stuff right there.
Creators are getting richer and richer. And consumers are getting poorer and poorer.
