I didn’t understand what was going on.
My stuff was good. I knew it was good. Or I thought it was good. Not sure anymore. Still, no one even seemed to care. No one seemed to notice. I had no clue what I was doing wrong.
In September 2014 I started using Medium. Mostly because I wanted to grow my audience online. And Medium seemed to be the perfect place to do so. With its millions of readers it seemed to be THE perfect platform to spread my ideas, thoughts, concepts and promote whatever product or service.
It was just perfect for me. The only problem was that I had no clue about how to use it. So for the first 10 months or so I was struggling, really, really hard, even though I was publishing more and more content there.
I was averaging around 1,000 views a month. I was totally clueless…
Why did I only get 1,000 views a month even though others are constantly getting thousands of views on a single article? I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to grow my audience on Medium. I wanted my stuff to get noticed. I wanted my ideas to spread. But they didn’t…

After more than 10 months of not seeing any results, I decided to do something against it. I took the conscious decision to turn this thing around and put in the work it would take to build my brand on Medium, to get noticed and to get my ideas to spread.
So that’s what I did. I put in the work and started experimenting and analyzing what other people did to grow their audience. I studied the past. I studied what they did. I studied and analyzed how they did it.
I analyzed people’s timelines. I wanted to know what they did to get their ideas to spread.I wanted to know what I was doing wrong. I studied people like Ali Mese. Benjamin Hardy. Or Jon Westenberg. I studied them all.
But I didn’t change my writing. I kept my writing exactly as it was. Because that’s the only thing that really works. To have your own unique style. And once I figured out the small tips, tricks, hacks and techniques they used to get their profiles off the ground, I got going.
I applied all the techniques and strategies I learned and I started seeing first results. Within just one short month I was able to get my views up to 6,000 views a month. An increase of 600%. I was confident that the things I was doing were working…

So I kept doing what I was doing. I kept doing my thing. I kept experimenting and applying the techniques I saw others using while staying true to my own style. As a matter of fact, I was developing my own style and getting more and more confident over time.
And only 4 short months after I’ve decided to focus more on Medium, my stats were at more than 30,000 views a month. And they have been around that number ever since. So the techniques I’ve used helped me to grow my monthly views from 1,000 to more than 30,000 monthly views in just 4 short months.

And not only this. My follower numbers kept rising as well. Organically. I didn’t have to do anything. I also launched a publication a few months later. And that publication has almost 14,000 real followers now (as of writing this).
As my Medium account is now pretty much on auto-pilot and all I have to do is to hit the publish button to get hundreds or even thousands of views with one single article, I’ve decided to write down all of the things I’ve learned over the past year.
So I sat down over the past few months and created one of the first guides out there on how to grow your audience and build your brand on Medium. It includes…
