What’s your escape skill?
by Yann Girard
What’s the one skill that will help you to escape the rat race?
What’s the one skill you need to be able to buy yourself some freedom?
I know it’s a tough question. A really tough one.
And there’s no one size fits all answer.
And I’m not talking about what’s the one skill you have that people will pay you to do. Because this means that you’ll still have to rely on people hiring you to do this or do that.
When you’re only focusing on the skill people might pay you money for, you might end up a freelancer. Or freelance consultant.
Don’t get me wrong here. That’s not a bad thing at all. But it’s just not really an escape.
Sometimes it can be way worse to be a freelancer than to work a 9 to 5 gig. The constant grind to find clients. The hustle. The networking. The expectations.
So ask yourself that question again.
What’s your escape skill?
And the more you ask yourself that question, the more you’ll realize that it’s not just that one skill you need. What you really need these days is a set of skills.
Being able to do something that people might pay you to do is just the beginning. What happens next is where the real magic happens.
Your escape skill these days is the skill to be able to do many different things at the same time. To be a jack of all trades.
Skills like copy writing. Storytelling. Marketing. Selling. Social Media. Networking. And a few more things. And of course that one thing you’re really good at.
This holds true especially when you’re just starting. And don’t have a lot of cash to hire someone else to do all the other stuff for you.
I know. That’s not what many people want to hear. That’s not what I wanted to hear when I started. But it’s the truth.
That one skill will probably not help you a whole lot. Only a set of skills to amplify that one skill will…
