Charlie Kirk Has Convinced Me of a Single Truth
Our only power is the power of one
On September 10, 2025, the events that took place on an outdoor stage at Utah Valley University blipped across my radar, but I intentionally looked away. Why? I’m doing my darnedest to direct my attention toward things that are in my immediacy, to be highly aware of how my actions confer meaning, and to be exceedingly conscious of scale — something I would say Charlie Kirk knew had immense power.
It was days later that I decided maybe a quick five minutes to gather the details, and gauge immediate reactions. What I saw in less than five minutes horrified me. To realize that millions of people had been compelled to be a part of the audience, to be witness if you will, simply by algorithmic strength, was astonishing.
The intensity of the footage I saw made me immediately leave my home office and advise my children, ages 11 and seven, that a popular Internet personality had been shot at an event on a college campus, and to request that they use extreme caution before clicking on any link or video with his name in the title.
As young as they are, they have plenty of ‘controlled parameters,’ which amounts to small Internet ‘comfort circles.’ Though I prefer not to censor, and instead leave the door wide open for conversation, context…
