Milk Toast & Other Signs Society Is Doomed
My unsolicited grammar lessons & the language harbingers of imminent societal collapse
We live in dark times. The earth grows warmer. Pollutants kill our ecosystems. Our rights slowly ebb away. Daily, people “disappear” from our unforgiving yet well-paved streets.
Collectively, our grammar has plunged into a dank, rancid sewer. Every time a professional writer uses “irregardless” or a social media rant speaks of cereal killers, an angel in heaven loses his wings … or Satan gains a new demon.
Yesterday, I read a featured article in a high-profile publication about “all of the hard-working mom’s” on Mother’s Day. I screamed into the inappropriate apostrophe abyss and a part of my soul shattered forever. Later, I turned on the doomsday scroll that is 24-hour news. A CNN reporter spoke of people “literally glued to their television sets.”
I wondered how that would work, and if glue would adhere to a TV screen. I fantasized about my angry descent into Falling Down territory.
The dumbing down of society may not be the overt cause of the vitriolic, chasm-deep divides and corrupt, inept leadership that riddle many of our nations. However, it certainly doesn’t help. Poor grammar, a lack of respectful disagreements, and…
