In a world where most of us now live on social media, the art of face-to-face contact is diminishing. We have entered a new generation where technology has taken over our older, more traditional ways of living.

From walking into a clothing store to shop til you drop, to wanting to make an appointment at your general bank.

It is a sign of the times.

During the covid pandemic, we adapted. Zoom meetings are now the norm post pandemic.

Yet we remain as human beings, despite often being just a number amongst the new societal way of living.

Some of the effects of being deprived of human contact can have on people can include isolation, exclusion.

The new ways of communicating have left some people in society unable to access social clubs or coffee mornings for example. For some people, these groups were a lifeline. They could meet friends. They could socialise. Also, people could endure your well being through such interactions.

People were reliant on such events.

A few posts on social media doesn’t fulfil such a requirement.

We know that lack of human contact can have an impact to our health. People like to share their personal stories and recent events through interactions and social space.

The way forward would be to either restart these events, where possible. Or, to simply create our own.

Social exposure can benefit our mental health by removing the feelings of isolation and exclusion.

I feel that it is always of benefit to look out for one another. We can probably all think of someone who either lives alone, or has perhaps become withdrawn from life somewhat over the last 2–3 years.

Why not become proactive where possible, to support such people. In turn, perhaps society can change the perspective someone may have about the society in which we live.

I would always advocate that if you feel someone is struggling, that you contact the relevant professional for help and advice.
