Renae felt much better hours after the encounter. In the late afternoon, after classes, she found herself alone in the campus greenhouse. She was in her element now. She kept her hands parallel on either side of the clay pot in front of her.

Dimmed sunlight spilled in through the domed windows of the campus greenhouse, soaking everything in a golden hue: the hanging plants whose green leaves and colorful buds dripped from their baskets, the assortment of trees scattered by the glass walls, the stacks of unused pots in the far corner, and the long, wooden potting tables, freshly topped with soil, fertilizer, and shed plant parts.

This was the end of the day at Bridge Feilds when everyone was going into the city center or returning to their dorms. She could hear the fading echo of students’ laughter and shouts as those headed to the east wing of campus passed by.
