Eight years may not sound like a long period of time, but it’s an eternity in tech. In fact, in a world that just keeps spinning faster and faster, Nintendo has been a rare beacon of constancy. But with Thursday’s teaser trailer, a longheld limbo finally came to an end.

In many ways, Nintendo borrows from the strategies of greater tech giants like Apple. More than innovation, it’s the user experience that stands as the central priority for both companies. Nintendo and Apple famously make products that are accessible and built to last. Dust off any old Nintendo console bought in a flea market and you’ll see what I mean.

But where Apple plays into our fast-moving ecosystem with a new line of tech annually, Nintendo coasts on the enduring quality of its products. And nowhere in the company’s history has that been more evident than in the soaring success of the Nintendo Switch.

As new products have come out year after year, this current gap between console releases marks the longest in the company’s 40-year history in the industry. And they’re no worse off for it; Nintendo continues to dominate gaming sales.
