The Younger Generation Is Stepping Up to Save Humanity
Here’s how you as a writer can be their ally
Last week I walked past (but not through) the gates of Columbia University, where I had spent my most formative and somewhat idyllic teaching years.
Yesterday, I joined the crowd protesting in front of them.
The gates were locked, as students at Columbia University and college campuses across the country have taken their place at the forefront of the movement against genocide in Gaza.
These students are schooling themselves and their universities in civil disobedience and social justice. This is true learning by doing.
Presidents of universities built on the reputations of writers of free and radical thinking are being brought to their knees by a generation of students who are simply living the values they (the institution) claims to profess.
This generation is stepping in and taking up the cause, but let’s not let go of the torch just yet.
Let’s bear it together, using our greatest assets: our voices, experience, and presence to support the student-led fight against genocide.
