Where Are We Going?

Existential Angst of Modern Day

Thoughts for personal evolution

Have you ever had that strange feeling that nothing you do today matters at all in regards to your life 10 years from now? While most people enjoy making plans and setting goals, I on the other hand, struggle with both of these mental and emotional activities.

Many of us struggle to find the right career path or even to start the business of our dreams. But, why? Where are we going? How do we know we aren’t exactly where we should be right now, in this very moment of our lives? Is there really a final goal or path that leads us to our destiny?

When having these types of thoughts, I always go back to “The Myth of Sisyphus” by Albert Camus. In this story, “the gods” condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly roll a rock to the top of a hill, only for it to roll back down again, forcing him to perform the same task for eternity.

I have plenty of contemplative moments that lead me to feel exactly like the poor wretch, Sisyphus. I often feel that our struggles, worries and goals are simply that rock that we are condemned in this life to ceaselessly roll up the hill, only to watch it fall back down again.

On a positive note, we should all have as much fun as humanly possible while we are rolling this rock up our hills. As Camus noted, “one must imagine Sisyphus happy”. I tend to identify myself as a Hedonistic Existentialist. In other words, “Eat, Drink, and be Merry!”.
