Habit stacking is one of those powerful productivity tools that, when mastered, can help you get so much more out of your day. In fact, I would sooner call it a lifestyle change than a productivity tool. That’s how powerful it can be.

What is habit stacking?

Also referred to as “habit chaining,” it’s the act of adding an action on top of an already existing habit, therefore making it a new habit.

A simple example is when you already have an established morning routine like brushing your teeth first thing in the morning when you wake up. You decide that you want to take better care of your hair, so you start using hair care products right after brushing your teeth; you’re already in the bathroom anyways, so it makes it easier to remember than doing it randomly in the middle of the day.

The new habit you’re trying to form rides on the old one until it becomes second nature. You have successfully habit stacked.

Some things to consider

There’s the ever-popular saying that it takes 21 days to form a habit. This is unfortunately a myth, and this article talks about it (as well as the phases of habit formation).
