Determining Janma Lagna of Sri Narendra Modi, The Indian Prime Minister: Part 1

Like the horoscopes of the celebrities, there are few versions also of Modi’s horoscope. Good thing, although there are no disputes on the date and place of birth, the birth-time is disputed. He is born in small village in Gujrat, India on 17th September 1950 some time in the morning.

There is difference in opinion regarding the birth Lagna among the astrologers. The July 2014 edition of Modern Astrology (Ed: Gayatri Devi Vasudev) consider the Lagna in Libra 17d 30’. There are many websites in the internet which consider Modi’s birth to be in Scorpio Lagna conjoined with Moon and Mars.

Before venturing into the analysis of life events of Narendra Modi, we need to validate the horoscope that fits well with the past life-events! The objective of the 1st article is to determine the correct Rasi Lagna.

Determining the Correct Rasi Lagna (D1 Lagna)

Since the birth is in the border of Libra and Scorpio Lagna, we will validate the navamsa lagna from Aquarius Navamsa to Gemini Navamsa (for Libra Lagna) and Cancer Navamsa to Scorpio Navamsa (for Scorpio Lagna)

Option 2: Libra Lagna

We will start with analysis of the horoscope like any other. Only after that we will try to fit the life-events to the horoscope. Jumping directly to the fitting life events to the horoscope can also introduce some biases. Hence, the approach is to first analyse the horoscope as if we didn’t know who this horoscope belonged to.

Overall Analysis as per Option 1: Scorpio Lagna

• Lagnesha Mars is placed in the Lagna with debilitated 9th lord Moon. But the debility is cancelled due to Mars’s placement in the Lagna. Debility of the 9th lord in the Lagna should give many set backs, especially in the early part of life, the neecha-bhanga will makes things better in the later part of life.
• Conjunction of Lagna and Lagnesha with Moon in the Lagna guarantees high fame.
• Placement of the 9L in the Lagna indicate grand fortune, especially since there is cancellation of the debility, else, it would not be been the case. Weakness of the 9L indicate ceaseless trouble in life and man failures.
• In terms of nature Moon-Mars influence on the should have given him a strong Scorpio trait, i.e., extremely vengeful. It should have indicated a personality where the native is unable to forgive and forget until he has taken his Vengeance. However, Modi appears to be someone who has a sunny disposition, have high emotional quotient, who is able to take his defeat with poise and equanimity. In my view, he does not have the nature of Scorpio which indicate pent-up-emotions and sudden outbursts.
• On the other hand, if we take Libra as the Lagna, Venus being Lagna lord placed with Saturn (life of an ascetic) in Leo. Leo indicate dignified and sunny disposition of the native.
• This becomes clearer when we look at the Navamsa where Mars is debilitated while Venus is placed in Vargottama. His eloquence and suave nature is granted by Venus.
• Now where does the power come from? 5L of power and influence is Jupiter and is placed in 4H of land indicating rajayoga pertaining to the rulership of the land. This is aspected by Mars, the lagna lord from the Lagna also forming the combination for power i.e., association of Lagna and 5H. So, power is not denied in this Lagna well.
• 10L of Karma is in the 11H of Labha with 11L Mercury. This according to Maharishi Parashara gives wealth, happiness, sons, virtue, truthfulness and a delightful disposition.
• Here the achievement in life is equivalent to the amount of earning or income that you can get as the 10L is in the Labha bhava. On the other hand, as per Libra lagna 10L in the 2H forming the Simhasana yoga, the yoga for fame and achievement in life.
• In my opinion, Modi’s strength is speech and his emphasis is right conduct (and image) than increasing wealth. If we take Libra Lagna, then 10L in the 2H also gives wealth, but here the focus is to guide own people, family, community etc. due to the 2H involvement. Such people like to spend wealth (2H) on charitable activities (10H) and is honored by the rulers. This I think is an apt indication of his karma and life. As per Scorpio Lagna, 10L in the 11L should have made him an influential industrialist, which he is not.
• Also Mercury is the 8L and its conjunction with the 10L should also indicate many changes in livelihood etc. or some catastrophe or even breakage of Rajayoga. 8H has the ability to break Rajayoga as it represents loss (12H) of luck (9H).
• When Mars is placed in the 4H from Saturn, then the Bhava where Saturn is placed is damaged. This is because Mars aspects the sign where Saturn is placed and combined influence of Saturn and Mars damages any bhava, especially the living significations. For Sc Lagna, it falls in the 10H that should early loss of father. Modi’s father died in 1989 when Modi was 39 years old. On the other hand, if we take Libra Lagna, 9th lord Mercury is placed in the house of loss (12th) with two malefics, Sun and Ketu. Hence, Libra Lagna also explains that.

Overall Analysis as per Option 2: Libra Lagna

• Lagna is Libra hemmed between malefics Mars, Sun and Mercury. This indicate difficult childhood, and much struggles in life when young. For Libra Lagna which is ruled by Venus; Mars and Sun are dire malefics, indicating that the intensity of the struggle is huge!
  Native’s disposition when he grows up and what native does with the life is seen from the disposition of the Lagnesha.
• Lagnesha Venus is placed in Labha bhava although in a enemy sign. Lagnesha is however, placed with dear friend Saturn, also a Yogakaraka (4L/5L) for Libra Lagna.
• Placement of Lagnesha in a fixed sign with a slow moving Graha indicate fixity of purpose in life. In the 11H, all graha gives Gain in life. What is gained in life is seen from the natural and functional significations of the Graha. Saturn is the 4L/ 5L who is placed with Lagnesha and 8L Venus. Strength of 4L and 5L indicate gain of rulership of a land (4L). Conjunction of 5L with Lagna is a Rajayoga.The Rajayoga happening in Leo a royal sign indicate that its potential to cause rise to the native in life is incredibly high.
• Classics say that rasi and navamsa dispositor of a Bhava lord should not be placed in a dusthana. Here, Sun is placed in the 12H of loss with Ketu, the graha of sudden events indicate the power could be lost or there will always an element of danger of loss of the power due to significations of Sun, Ketu, Mercury or the sign in the 12th, Kanya. Ketu can indicate riots, Sun- religion, Mercury- communications, Kanya- movement (dual signs) and ladies. There is a element of loss of power due to religious extremism, religious riots (Sun), involving miscommunications, misunderstanding or lack of coordination (Mercury) etc.
• Strength of 9H indicate the rise of fortune in life. Mercury is the 9L who is exalted in the 12H. Exaltation of 9L indicate that the native will rise very high in life. Also, the 9th lord is conjoined with the Dharma Karaka Sun indicating a religious person who will also spend wealth for construction of temples (Sun) and religious institutions. Conjunction with Ketu in the house of moksha indicate high regards for Monks and renunciates.
• However, its placement in a dusthana is not conducive. Maharishi Parashara says such position gives rise to loss of fortunes, although on good things, they like spend on righteous deeds and become poor on account of entertaining guests. Results differs with different Lagnas. In this case 9L in exaltation can’t cause loss of fortune. Hence, only the indication of expenditure on auspicious deeds such as building of temples, orphanages etc. holds true.
• Placement of 9L with Sun in the 12H also indicate his strong religious bent of mind, one who is more interested in pilgrimages (12H) etc. The expenditure can also be on temple building etc.
• Mercury being the 9L as well as the dispositor of the 9L indicate rise of fortune from the 32nd year.
• 10H is in Cancer, which is lorded by Moon. The best place for a Kendra lord is in Kona or conjunction with a Kona lord, without which the Kendra significantly loses its power to act.In this horoscope, Moon is placed in the 2nd house conjoined with the 2nd and 7th lord Mercury, thus attaining some maraka power.
• It is advisable to have malefics as the lords of the Kendra, as then they have higher capacity to dominate on the events in life. It is known fact that Krura Grahas have the most power to dictate on the results while Subha Grahas persuade instead of dictating. In the matters of Karma (Kendra), the dictating and directing attitude is better. History has many examples of how dictatorship (Krura Graha) of a capable king is far superior than democracy (Saumya Graha).
• Kendras are like the four doors of the fort and malefic owners of these doors provide better protection of these doors. They can use their malefic means to stop any intruders, something that benefics are quite incapable.
• Here Moon is of weak paksha-bala and is debilitated indicating that it has become a malefic. Hence, it does not incur the Kendradhipatya dosa. Moon rightfully should have some association of the Kona lords Saturn or Mercury to give rise to a strong Rajayoga. However, Moon is placed with another Kendra lord and the 2nd lord Mars indicating its power to give rajayoga is minimal.
• Hence, we can infer that Saturn being the yogakaraka, its conjunction with the Lagna lord is the strongest and sole giver of Rajayoga in the horoscope. Saturn starts giving its results from the 36th year onwards
• The yoga of Saturn-Venus in the 11H is very key in the horoscope and it is likely to fructify in the natural periods of 11, 23, 35, 47, 59 etc. as per Sudarshana chakra principle.
• Now judging the placement of Saturn in the horoscope, it is placed in the 11H with the Lagnesha Venus. It is highly desirable for Krura Graha such as Saturn to be placed in Upachaya 3–6–10–11, especially in the 11th house, as from here it can give unbridled gains.
• Saturn can give gains from illegal sources, bribery and corruption, however, it will not do so in the sign of Sun where it behaves more as the beholder of the Dharma. In Leo, Saturn however, makes the person a recluse, one who is devoid of happiness in life, one who is not attached to own people, family, wife and children, which is what Saturn will give due to its conjunction with the Lagna lord Venus.
• From the 11H, Saturn aspects its exaltation sign in Lagna, own sign in 5H and its friendly sign in 8H. Aspect of Saturn on its friendly, own or exaltation sign will give good yogas pertaining to these houses. No doubt, power, status (5H) and fame (Lg) is confirmed for the horoscope. Its aspect on the 8H will also grant good health and immunity from diseases. Yoga or pranayama (Sa) is well suited for such native, that will keep him hale and hearty.
• From the 5th house house Devaguru Brhaspati is having mutual aspect with 5L Saturn. This indicates that the native will be deeply philosophical and will have strong memory and intellect. Saturn-Jupiter is Brahma yoga and gives understanding the philosophy of life and death. Strong 5L and 5H indicate strong mental faculties such as intellect, memory, planning etc. Jupiter retrograde in the 5H making it even more potent.
• Saturn gives highly auspicious results (success) in Fiery and Watery signs as well as Gemini. However, in fixed signs, it indicate life full of struggle, especially in young and middle age. The last part of life is comparatively happier and smoother.
• With regards to Jupiter, it is the Graha of wisdom (2H, 5H) and blessings (Kona 5H, 9H) and it should be well placed in the horoscope for the native to find contentment and happiness in life.
• Retrograde Jupiter in the 5H ensure that he should be devoid of children. So, even though the native is married, children may be denied.
• Besides the children aspect, Jupiter in Aq is treated akin to its exaltation (Varahamihira). Such Jupiter should make the native just, expert in language, grammar, economics, philosophy. Such person is broadminded and respect other religion, philosophy etc. They are usually concerned more about the right path than the outcome. They are dutiful and have a keen sense of justice.
• Native with strong Jupiter in the 5H are interested in knowledge pursuits and are usually contented, eloquent, capable, skilful, good in debates and arguments are have good writing skills. They are not too much inclined towards have grand wealth and are easily contended with basic comforts in life.
• So, beside children, this Jupiter is giving many blessings in this horoscope. Thanks to its aspect on the 9H, 11H and Lagna.
• Jupiter however is a dire malefic for Libra Lagna being 3L and 6H and it certainly give failed 7H marriage, family and children.

Conclusion

Conclusion of the preliminary analysis of the Rasi Lagna Prima-facie, the Rasi Lagna appears to be Libra instead of Scorpio. However, we need to do further analysis of his life-events to determine which Lagna explains most of the events accurately.

Chapter 1: Synopsis

Narendra Modi grew up poor in northern India, the son of a street merchant.

• Scorpio Lagna: Lagna lord is in the Lagna which should not give difficult childhood, however, it is placed with the debilitated Chandra, which can indicate difficulties in childhood. However, there is a cancellation of debility of Chandra, indicating that the native should have a comfortable childhood. He was running Saturn’s period during childhood who is a functional malefic for this Lagna, but placed in a Kendra and no affliction to the Lagna. Hence can’t cause poverty at childhood.
• How successful his father was in life need to be seen from the Sun, 9th house and the 9th lord. Father’s livelihood can be seen from the 2nd house of wealth from Sun, 10th house from the 9th House and the 9th lord. The signification from the Sun remains unchanged, hence now, the focus to is look at the 10th house from the 9th house and its lord.
• Livelihood (Sc Lg): According to Scorpio Lagna, father is signified by Cancer and Moon. Moon is placed in the Lagna (susthana) in debility but have cancellation of neecha-bhanga. From the 9th house, the 9th lord is placed in 5th house with the 5th lord, indicating that his father should have been influential. From the 9th, the 10th lord is Mars who is placed in the 5th house (from 9th) with the 5th lord, indicating success at work. From the 9th lord, the 10th is ruled by Sun, who is placed with Retrograde Mercury-Ketu in the 11th house (from 9th lord). There is some degree of affliction due to nodal axis. But it does not explain much about the poverty.
• Libra Lagna: Lagna under papakartari yoga while Lagnesha with the Saturn. Both these are better indicator of difficulties in childhood. He was born in Saturn’s Mahadasa for the 1st 12 years, confirming the poverty indicated by Saturn conjunction with the Lagna lord in an enemy sign Leo. However, Saturn being an Yogakakara, the situation didn’t last for long and became better with time.
• Livelihood (Li Lg): According to Libra Lagna, the 9th house is Gemini. The lord of Gemini is placed under affliction by the Ketu and Sun (also uccha-retrogression indicating, going down with time). From the 9th house, 10th is ruled by Jupiter who is retrograde in an inimical sign. 10th house is afflicted by Rahu. From the 9th lord, 10th house is again Gemini, whose lord is afflicted. I think there are ample conditions which shows his dire state.

He entered politics as a youth and quickly rose through the ranks of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist political party.

• Scorpio Lagna: Lagna lord in the Lagna with the 9th lord under neecha-bhanga indicating power and fame.
• Libra Lagna: Lagna lord is placed with the Yogakaraka Saturn in the 11th house, aspected by a natural benefic Jupiter. The dispositor Sun is placed with the 9th lord in the 12th house. Indicating some difficulties and struggle in his political career. But the Venus-Saturn are giving his Rajayoga. However, Sun-Ketu-Mercury are not so favourable.

In 2002 Gujarat riots, he was alleged to be responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Muslims during civil unrest, but he was later exonerated.

• Scorpio Lagna: I think Scorpio Lagna does not explain the tainting of Modi’s image as the Lagna lord is placed in the Lagna conjoined with the Moon. For tainting of the name, the Lagna and the Lagna lord should be associated with either Saturn or Rahu. Modi was running Venus-Mercury-Mercury. Venus and Mercury are not involved in any defaming yoga.
• Libra Lagna: This Lagna does indicate defame yoga as the Lagna lord is placed in an enemy sign (Leo) and conjoined with the Karaka for loss of name (Saturn). There must be involvement of two other ingredients in the combination, the 8th lord for great misfortune and Badhakesh for ghost attack (completely erratic and irrational behavior). Venus is also the 8th lord, placed with the yogakaraka Saturn indicating its potential to break rajayoga. For sthira Lagna, the 9th lord is Badhakesh who is placed in the 12th house and afflicted by Sun and nodes, indicating grave danger. The incident happened in Venus-Saturn-Rahu. Venus-Saturn is the straight combination for the loss of name and position (8th lord conjoined with yogakaraka and Lagna is involved). Why Rahu? Because Rahu is placed in the Nakshatra of Saturn, thus connecting him to the problem directly.
• Many ask the question, whether he was complicit in the Crime. For that, we need to look at his psychology. Malefics in the 5th house and 5th lord afflicted can make the person have criminal tendencies, as 5th governs our psychology (our likes and dislikes and the state of mind). Retrograde Jupiter’s placement in the 5th house makes him highly just, fair and broadminded. It is not not possible for him to be complicit to the crime with such Jupiter.

In 2014 he was elected prime minister of India.

• Scorpio Lagna: The Rajayoga for this Lagna are (1) Mars-Moon 9th lord with the Lagna lord in the Lagna, but this is more of a wealth giving yoga (2) mutual aspect between 4th and 5th Saturn and Jupiter, but this is weak as Saturn rules the 3rd house, (3) Mutual aspect between 5th and 7th lord Jupiter and Venus- but this is more of a knowledge bestowing yoga than a power bestowing one.
• Libra Lagna: The Rajayoga for this Lagna are (1) Moon-Mars. 10th lord in the 2nd house with the 2nd lord causing Simhasana yoga, (2) Lagna lord conjoining the yogakakara in the 11th house and aspected by retrograde Jupiter from the 5th house.
• The Rajayoga happened when he transitioned from Moon-Mars to Moon-Rahu. Moon-Mars gave him the much needed boost for his political success and gain mass affection. The swearing in happened in Moon- Rahu. Rahu is placed in the 5th house of power from the Moon and is dearly connected the Rajayoga combination of Venus-Saturn as it is placed in yogakaraka Saturn’s nakshatra. The involvement of Rahu in Godhra episode and the same Rahu bringing him to the power of PM does indicate that the Godhra episode worked in some manner a stepping stone to power. Rahu aspect on the Lagna lord Venus = Controversy bringing one to the limelight. This is best explained with Libra Lagna. This is also indicated for Scorpio Lagna to some extent as Rahu is placed in the 5th house from the Lagna and also the dasa lord Moon, but then he is not able to cause controversy as Mars is strongly placed in the Lagna and should resist Rahu’s influence.

Chapter 2: Early life

Narendra Modi was born in the small town of Vadnagar, in northern Gujarat, India. His father was a street merchant who struggled to support the family.

Though an average students in school, Modi spent hours in the library and was known as a strong debater.

• What gave Narendra Modi passion for books and debating? It is well explained by Libra Lagna, 9th lord in the 2nd house with the 2nd lord and Lagnesha Venus with yogakaraka Saturn indicate speech will be an important aspect of his power and influence. Mars in the 2nd with 9th lord Moon indicate a extremely capable speaker (strong 2nd house), which has much aggression (Mars), which has the ability to sway the opinion of the Masses (Moon), is also humble (debilitated Moon) and highly knowledgeable and well informed (9L in 2H). Also Venus (eloquence) conjoining yogakaraka Saturn (power giver) also indicate his eloquence. Venus is also a great debater and is placed with Saturn (extremely hardworking and persevering).
• I don’t think this is so well explained from Scorpio Lagna as Jupiter becomes the 2nd lord, with no one placed in the 2nd house. However, Jupiter is aspected by Saturn and Venus indicating some degree of eloquence and debates. But this does not become part of his personality as the Lagna is not involved.

In his early teens, he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist political party. At age eight Modi discovered the RSS, and began attending its local shakhas (training sessions).

• This makes incredible sense for Libra Lagna as he was running the dasa of Saturn till the age of 12. Saturn was preparing the stage for his future eminence as he is the yogakaraka for the Libra Lagna and is conjoined with Lagna lord Venus. He was running Saturn-Rahu. Rahu is again showing its colour by bringing him to the right contacts for him to grow in power. Rahu is a key planet in this horoscope for the Rajayoga.
• For Scorpio Lagna, it does not make sense as Saturn is not the one who is bringing him to power although it is a mild raja-yoga giver.

Chapter 3: A Life Dedicated to Politics

Modi married at 18 but spent little time with his bride and eventually ended the marriage.

Marriage is governed by the 7th house. So let’s examine the 7th house from both the Lagnas.

• Scorpio Lagna: 7th lord is Venus and is placed with Shani in a enemy sign, of that of Surya. Shukra is conjoined with a friend in a Kendra, and is aspected by Guru. This does not show detachment from the wife and indicate happiness in marriage.
• Libra Lagna: 7th lord is Mars who is placed with a debilitated Moon in the 2nd house. This is also aspected by Rahu from the 6th house. This is a clear sign of marital problems.
• Conclusion: Libra better explains separation from wife. The Upapada in both cases fall in Gemini, hence we can’t differentiate using the Upapada. In both cases, the 2nd from Upapada is aspected by Rahu by graha drsti and its lord is debilitated indicating troubles in marriage, but with libra lagna, the trouble is more grave.

He dedicated his life to politics in Gujarat, joining the RSS in 1971.

The life’s mission is usually seen from influences on the Lagna, 9th house and 10th house.

• Scorpio Lagna: Lagna has 9L Moon and 6th lord Mars, this can indicate life mission to be related to social service (6H), fights in army (6H and Mars) for protection of righteousness (9H), for people (Moon), upliftment of downtrodden (debilitated Moon). 10th lord Sun is placed in the 11th house with Mercury and Ketu, but has no association with Lagna. So where does he get the power to rule?
• Libra Lagna: Lagna lord Venus is in the 11th house (gain) with Shani (working for poor) in royal sign Leo (indicating power), 9th lord Mercury is placed in the 12th house (charity) with Sun (power), 11L (gain). Having a keen sense of giving and social service as the 9th lord is in the 12th house. 10th lord Moon is in the 2nd house (look after people, feed people) with 2nd lord Mars (feeding signification very strong). 10th lord Moon aspects the 9th house indicating power in this destiny.
• Conclusion: There are mixed indications, but for Libra lagna, the significations of power is stronger as, (1) Lagnesha is in a royal sign (2) Lagnesha conjoined 5th lord of followers, (3) 9th lord conjoin royal planet Sun, (4) 10th lord conjoin the 2nd lord in 2nd house (Simhasana yoga). Hence, I am inclined to accept Libra Lagna.

During the 1975–77 political crisis, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, banning political organisations such as the RSS.

Modi went underground and wrote a book, Sangharsh ma Gujarat (Gujarat in Emergency), which chronicles his experiences as a political fugitive.

Writing is indicated by 3rd house and the planets which give writing skills are the Gurus, Jupiter, Venus and Mercury (karaka for communication).

• Scorpio Lagna: 3rd lord Saturn is placed with Venus in the 10th house indicating that he can write and gain fame and power (GL conjunction), and this can also catapult him to power (10th house).
• Libra Lagna: 3rd lord Jupiter is in 5th house aspecting the Lagna. This indicate good writing skills. Jupiter is aspected by Lagnesha Shukra and also Shani indicate the writing about emergency (Shani). Shani is aspecting from royal sign Leo, indicating a political angle in his writing. The relationship with the lagna and the Lagnesha indicate a more engaged writer.

In 1978, Modi graduated from Delhi University with a degree in political science and completed his master’s work at Gujarat University in 1983.

Graduation is indicated by influence of 9th house i.e., higher education.

• Scorpio Lagna: 9th lord is Moon and conjoined with Mars in Scorpio indicating education in Martian related subjects such as army, battles etc.
• Libra Lagna: 9th lord Mercury is exalted and conjoined with Surya indicating political science (Sun=politics)
• Conclusion: Libra lagna better explains it.

In 1987, Narendra Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which stood for Hindu nationalism.

Religion should be indicated by 9th house and Karaka. They should closely influence his Lagna, 10th house, lord, and the navamsa dispositor of the 10th lord (from strongest among Sun, Moon and Lagna).
