Listen carefully

Gut feeling

--

It doesn’t matter how many I say “just let go” when it comes to my writing, and despite of been quite good at it, from time to time a piece will appear that will totally compromise that motto.

The goal is to write and publish, to let go, to don’t dwell for perfection. Yes, it can always done better, but always done and dusted and spending days perfecting one piece. Also, this entire process is what actually makes you better, where you learn and understand weaknesses, strengths and areas of improvement.

There are also pieces that just come naturally from start to finish, the ones that once that once they pop into your head, your fingers start moving like someone telling you exactly what to type. In a matter of minutes a draft is done and few edits later is ready to go. It is a wonderful thing and the feeling hard to describe; a mix between fulfilment, pride, joy and success.

However, every now and then and will come with a piece that despite of clicking “publish” and try to move away from it, it will keep calling me. It’s not done, there’s something else, and it has to be finished. That’s the gut feeling.

So when this happens, and it just happened yesterday, I go back to it until I find what is missing. I don’t normally know what it is, but I know is not there.

Sometimes is faster than others, but it is always a matter of trial and error, but above anything else, a matter of iteration; combining ideas, trying different words and in some cases, even changing perspective.

When it’s done, it’s done. I don’t know how, I just know it. That voice that called me back gets silent and slowly starts to fade away. It’s not just that I know it’s done, I feel it.

Yes, the premise remains the same, get things done and don’t overthink it, don’t fall into the trap of perfectionism and never getting out to the world, but also, when that voice knocks at your door pay attention and listen carefully, because it usually has important things to say, and learning to understand it, it’s also part, and very important one, in the process of becoming a better artist and creator
