A Typical Super Semester Sunday

Time for a few lines in this wonderful blog. With only four more weeks of the Super Semester remaining, the pressure continues to rise. Slowly but surely, I start to understand the hidden purpose of the Super Semester: Showing students, who are pursuing a career in broadcast journalism, that working after hours and on days off is a going to be a regular thing.

Today is Sunday, April 17th and it’s a gorgeous day out. The sun is shining, the temperatures are perfect in the high seventies, and a fresh breeze is blowing, which makes it even more enjoyable. However, instead of enjoying this wonderful day, the Super Semester students Brad Cieslewicz, Samantha Glenn and myself are sitting in the dark newsroom working on multimedia stuff, editing packages, and formulating this blog. It teaches us that broadcast journalism isn’t a 9-5 job. Whenever a story is breaking, we have to be ready to go out and shoot footage of it.

The struggle is real

Since the last post, we’ve changed tasks again so I got to anchor and produce again, which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately though, I also had to do sports and weather again, which told me one more time that I couldn’t be less interested in the sports culture of the United States. Furthermore, my on air performance that day was absolutely horrible. I couldn’t get a single sentence out without stuttering, which led to me being really angry with myself. It might sound arrogant and like an illusion but I expect myself to be perfect in everything I do. However, after a couple of hours I realized that even though I did terrible on this broadcast, I’ll be able to use it to avoid mistakes like that in the future.

For the next couple of weeks I won’t return to the anchor / producer chair but focus on packages, VOs, and multimedia stuff instead. I’m looking forward to cover some exciting events such as the Republican debate for governor of Missouri, which will take place right here on the campus of Lindenwood University. Especially for me, this package is special due to the fact that it’ll give me more of an idea how state politics in the United States work. That’s really important to me because I got invited to the University of Illinois Springfield to interview for one of the only 18 spots in their “Public Affairs Reporting” program. My interview will take on April 30th and I’m already studying a lot of Illinois politics!

Nice to be on every single screen in the studio.

Summarized, it was a regular Sunday in the life of a Super Semester student. Working a lot and hanging out with my classmates was a good time as always and ending the day with a 4:2 win in my weekly indoor soccer game, was a pleasure as well!

Tune in for the next broadcast on LUTV this Tuesday at 3 p.m. central standard time!

See you then!

P.S: We had the gymnastics nationals at Lindenwood last week and all of us covered it! Watch out for three different packages coming up on our YouTube channel soon!
