7 Insights I Learned at WNORTH, a Women Leadership Conference

by Lana Glatt, Engineering Program Manager and Engineering Experience Lead at Cisco ThousandEyes

Day one of WNorth

WNorth is a conference dedicated to bridging the gender power gap by elevating women in the leadership pipeline. Created with just the right number of participants, the convening ensures meaningful connections without overwhelming attendees. It brings together women from diverse backgrounds and interests, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie that is greatly needed in technology.

Attending this conference was an incredible experience, offering a blend of both personal and professional growth. Below are the most impactful insights I took from the event that will help grow my leadership capacity and provide valuable insights for those interested in building resilience and career support.

The Strength of Your Network

Our strength is often a reflection of the people we surround ourselves with. Networking is a powerful tool that goes beyond mere social interactions; it is the cornerstone of building meaningful relationships and expanding our horizons. By connecting with diverse individuals, we gain insights into different perspectives, knowledge, and opportunities that we might not have encountered otherwise. These connections can provide valuable insights, support, and mentorship, which are crucial for both personal and professional growth.

Moreover, a strong network can act as a safety net in challenging times, offering guidance and assistance when needed. It fosters a sense of community and belonging, reminding us that we are not alone in our journey. Networking also enhances our visibility and reputation within our industry, opening doors to collaborations, partnerships, and career advancements.

In essence, networking is not just about what we can gain but also about what we can give. By contributing to the growth and success of others, we create a reciprocal environment where everyone thrives. Thus, cultivating and nurturing our network is a continuous process that enriches our lives and empowers us to achieve our fullest potential.

Mentorship as a Reciprocal Relationship

One of the conference’s speakers mentioned Indra Nooyi’s insight that “mentoring is a two-way street,” underscoring the mutual benefits of mentorship. Enjoying what we do is fundamental to doing it well. Finding our voice and becoming comfortable with challenging conversations is part of this process. Effective mentorship involves reflecting on what we value in our mentors and striving to be authentic in these relationships.

Defining Personal Space and Boundaries & Chase Joy

Finding and establishing our own space is crucial in both personal and professional life. It’s important to recognize when certain opportunities or roles do not align with our values or happiness. Reflecting on whether our choices would satisfy our younger selves can provide clarity and direction. Understanding our own needs and desires is key to personal and professional fulfillment. There is no universal path to happiness or success.

In the workplace, setting clear boundaries ensures that we remain true to ourselves while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. It is essential to surround ourselves with supportive individuals who encourage our growth rather than compete with us. By prioritizing our well-being and aligning our professional endeavors with our core values, we create a foundation for a more satisfying and authentic life.

The Impact of Small Acts of Good

Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” The saying highlights the power of contributing positively within our immediate surroundings. Collective efforts of small good deeds can lead to significant and widespread transformation. Though seemingly minor, these acts can inspire others to take action, creating a ripple effect that amplifies the impact of each individual contribution.

Continuous Growth and Adaptation

There is no single formula or blueprint for success or fulfillment. It involves a blend of actions, behaviors, and perspectives. Continuous self-improvement, embracing uncertainty, and dealing with challenges are all part of the journey. Career changes can be an integral part of finding your path, offering new opportunities for growth, learning, and discovering what truly resonates with you.

Cultivating Relationships

An important takeaway was the significance of cultivating relationships with the women in our lives. These connections provide comfort and support, helping us navigate both personal and professional challenges. It’s essential to create spaces where women can uplift each other. Many of us downplay our strengths to fit in, fearing we don’t belong. However, embracing our true selves and acknowledging our achievements can inspire others to do the same.

Personal Perspective and Neuroscience

Neuroscience suggests that memory formation is highly individualized, influenced by a variety of factors. Therefore, my perspective on these insights might differ from others, and that diversity of thought is valuable. Attending this conference underscored the importance of connection, authenticity, and ongoing development. By fostering supportive relationships and embracing our unique paths, we can achieve both personal and professional success.

A heartfelt thank you to the organizers of WNORTH for arranging such an enriching and empowering event, and to Cisco and ThousandEyes Engineering for making my attendance possible.
