Working in Cyber Security: “Be ready to take up the challenges that come your way”

What is it like to work in cyber security? We ask some of the members of the team in Symantec. Today, we hear from Nidhi Menon, Associate Security Analyst.

How long have you been in this role?

I have been a part of my current team for one year. I work in the MSS Security Operations Center. We monitor customers’ networks, analyze data and alert them when abnormal activity is observed on their network.

How did you come to work in the field of cyber security?

I completed my master’s in Cyber Security Systems and Networks. I was then placed in Symantec through my university’s Campus Placement Program.

What advice would you give to someone who wants a job like yours?

Just enjoy what you do, and you will give the best of yourself! If you are interested in working in a role like mine, then you need good knowledge in the fields of network security, information security, etc. Learning is a never-ending process, so be enthusiastic about learning new things every day. Be open-minded and be ready to take up the challenges that come your way. Also, try to maintain your composure when under work pressure.

Is the course you studied at university relevant to the job you have now?

Yes, it is.

What do you think are three qualities someone who wants to work in a role like yours needs to have?

· Be a self-starter

· Have up to date knowledge about the industry

· Good leadership and communication skills
