Building a Mixtape: Darren Hanlon and Adorable and That Catchy Bassline

My next mixtape is in progress…

I just had an OMG musical realization: One of the chord progressions to “The Unmade Bed” by Darren Hanlon perfectly complements my favorite progression of all time — the baseline in “Homeboy” by Adorable.

Both are wonderful songs I could listen to on repeat. But together? They’re infectious and possibly the beginning of a great mixtape, one made up of songs that feature tabs of that ilk. Now I’m on the hunt to find other songs that would play nicely next to these two tunes to make my ultimate “let’s listen to music and just talk in-between songs” party soundtrack.

As inspiration (and exhibits A & B), I give you the videos for both songs (and yes, that’s Jens Lekman in the Darren Hanlon video!):

Adorable — “Homeboy”

From the album Against Perfection (1993)

Darren Hanlon — “The Unmade Bed”

From the album Little Chills (2004)

Did you catch the lyric “Pedestrian at Best?” in Hanlon’s track? I dig the thought of Courtney Barnett hearing that phrase in this song and jotting it in her journal and then creating this wonder.

“Pedestrian At Best” by Courtney Barnett

From the album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit (2015)

Naturally, this should follow on the mixtape as track three.

Looking at the math rhythm of the release dates for this mixtape so far, I’m guessing the next song will be released in… 2026?

But if you’ve got any other suggestions to move the mixtape along a wee bit more quickly, please share them below.

(I always love to chat mixtapes!)
