In 1996, I Got Dumped. Good Thing I Had The Wedding Present to Comfort Me.

Celebrating a pop-tastic year for music (even if there were a few implosions).

Loads of notable things happened in 1996.

The Seattle Supersonics went to the NBA finals, which was a huge deal for anyone who was in Seattle at that time — they all still talk about it (I didn’t arrive in Seattle until 1999, so I missed all that excitement). And the Nintendo 64 was released (Mario Kart, anyone?).

1996 also had its share of notable endings.

The Las Vegas Sands Hotel, which opened in 1952, was “imploded.” You could even say the “grunge scene” in Seattle “imploded” in 1996 as well. The movie Hype! came out that year — letting us all know grunge was in the rearview mirror, past its heyday and heading to the oldies stations.

Two “royal” couples split: Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced that year. So did Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley.

In the fall of 1996, I also found myself freshly dumped by my (then) significant other, and I was left frazzled, wondering where I’d end up next.

You know what emotionally pairs well with a relationship “imploding”?
