Sometimes, there’s a band*, well, it’s the band for its time and place. It fits right in there. And in 2024, that band is mega cat, in Seattle, Washington.

I don’t like to play favorites. I’ve been championing bands from my chosen hometown for over two decades. I recognize when a band is locally beloved and about blow up, and right now, on the cusp of springtime in 2024, it’s time to introduce you all to mega cat.

They are here to rock — and funk, and space-jazz — your face off.

mega cat is the creative brainchild of Kim West (keys) and Ryan Devlin (bass & guitar), a married couple best known for their longstanding Seattle indie band, the Smokey Brights. During COVID, the couple started a weekly jam session with drummer Aaron Benson. At their shows, West has spoken of their sense of isolation and desolation during pandemic, and how these weekly musical moments provided an outlet to escape it all. Eventually, they recognized that what began as a pandemic pastime had grown into a full record’s worth of really interesting, strange songs.
