What I Gave Up To Leave America

A rather unimpressive list of the sacrifices that I made to have a better life somewhere else.

I’m an American ex-pat living in France, and I am financially unable to return to the United States. This is because it is actually affordable to lead a healthy and secure life here in Europe, whereas in the USA it is simply out of my price range. I have written several articles regarding this, from which I received an overwhelming number of questions and comments from people who have done the same, or wish they could.

I have also received some criticism, mostly regarding the so called “privilege” that I enjoy being able to move away to another country — this article is in response to those critiques.

First, let me say that I am very grateful for my set of unique circumstances that have brought my daughter and I to where we are today, and I truly do feel blessed for it. That said, my reason for responding to the criticism I have mentioned is because I think that it comes from people who just can’t allow themselves to believe that they can, in fact, escape a nightmarish existence.

There is some great practical information out there about this topic by writers such as Tessa
