Business Etiquette is always that tricky subject where something is acceptable in one industry but not in another. But overall, in the world of business, good manners are necessary for getting ahead and landing that dream job. The most successful people know how to use their charm and business etiquette techniques to get the job done professionally and effectively. Here is a list of the Top 5 etiquette strategies that you can start using now.

Dress Code

We hear the expression “dress to impress” or “look good, do good” quite often, but it is, in fact, a helpful expression. The business world is a professional environment, and your attire should reflect that. When it comes to job interviews, you should always dress professionally. Make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle-free. Most typical business formal attire is suits, blouses, skirts, blazers, ties or other clothing that makes a good impression. Lately, there is a new trend of companies having a more “relaxed” attire. There are companies that wear jeans and tee-shirts to work every day. While in this environment it is okay to wear this type of attire, but if you are on your first interview, or conducting business with another company that you don’t know their everyday attire, the best rule of thumb is to dress business professional.

Arrival

It is important to arrive early. But how early to be exact? It is recommended to be 5 minutes early to your meeting or interview. Do not get inside the building 30 minutes early, as you should respect the host. Businesses plan their days tightly packed. Treat it as an honor to have the time to sit down and meet. By getting there extremely early, the business professional you are meeting will feel rushed. Rushing them will make them uncomfortable or give them a negative first impression making the meeting undesired.

First impression

You might have heard this before, and it’s true. The first impression is of the most important things you should keep in mind when meeting someone new. Put on some cologne/perfume — but not too much, do your hair, and dress accordingly. But first impressions are not all about how you look or smell. It is about how you can controlling the conversation and showing your knowledge. This is where a good icebreaker can help. Icebreaking is not just in the classroom or when you meet your new teammates. Hopefully, you do your research before going to a meeting or interview, so you have an idea of what the person is like you are meeting. If you by chance don’t do that, look around the office at pictures, trophies, anything that you can build a connection through. Using an ice breaker is a great way to put everyone at ease and get rid of the jitters that everyone has.

Gifts! Gifts! Gifts!

Who doesn’t like getting gifts? A basic ground rule is to bring something to the person conducting your interview, meeting, or allowing you to give a sales pitch. It doesn’t have to be something extravagant, just something small to show your appreciation. Think of it like going to a birthday party for someone you don’t know. While it is acceptable not to bring a present, you feel awkward and unprepared for the party. It’s the same thing in business. So what should you bring? The simple answer is to research the person and company you are conducting business with. Figure out what he or she likes, be observant when you are meeting with the person; you might find that he or she is into golf or hunting. Do not mistake bribery with kindness. Make your guest/potential business partner feel appreciated.

Follow-up

This may or may not sound trivial, but many still forget about it! Following up correspondence is seen as a proper gesture. After working with a client, customer or co-worker it is in good form to send a thank-you email or note, recognizing their business or efforts.
