The 10th anniversary of Bugatti’s Veyron won’t see another special or facelift but a new hypercar altogether. Powering the next-gen Veyron will be the standard 8.0-litre, quad-turbo, 1200bhp W16 from the SuperSport, though enhanced by about 300bhp thanks to a hybrid powertrain. With Hennessey’s Venom GT having displaced the Veyron as the title holder for fastest production car, parent company Volkswagen will endow the new Veyron with enough power to take back the crown.

Even if some say it goes against what the brand stands for, it isn’t surprising that Bugatti has opted to go the hybrid route as famed hypercar manufacturers like Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche already have integrated this tech with their latest offerings, the LaFerrari, the P1 and the 918 Spyder, respectively. Besides lending 300bhp and instant torque, the hybrid motor will be more fuel efficient (at top speed, 431kmph, the current Veyron’s fuel lasts only 82km) and produce less CO2 emissions.

As with the SuperSport, the next-gen 1500bhp hypercar will have a limited run of 450 units. While the current car will have to be modified with some serious aero work to manage the extra power, the lion’s share of work will involve fitting the electric powertrain and integrating it with the chassis. Bugatti intends not only to break the 431.78kmph record set by the Veyron SuperSport but also the 432.78kmph record made by the Hennessey Venom.

An expected price tag of over Rs 16 crore (without duties and taxes), time to plan a bank robbery.
