As reported earlier by ThrillOfDriving.com, Nissan has launched the face-lifted 2014 Sunny today at Rs 7.29 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The range extends up to Rs 10.22 lakh comprising eight variants and the car is to go on sale immediately in dealerships across India.

The new Sunny is currently Nissan’s flagship mid-sized sedan in India and has received extensive styling revisions inside and out. A bigger chrome front grille along with ‘Boomerang’ headlamps is reminiscent of the Teana and 370Z respectively. There are chrome highlights on the fog lamp shroud and these changes now lend the front-end a fresh look. 12-spoke alloy wheels are new and complement the car’s updated design. The rear-end gets a sporty bumper, chromed boot-lid garnish and the antenna has now moved to the back of the roof.

The mundane interior of the previous car has been spruced up with a piano black finished centre console and a wide touchscreen infotainment system. The steering gets contemporary audio and call controls. The range-topping XV variant gets options of leather upholstery and side-airbags too while all variants come equipped with ABS, EBD and a driver’s airbag as standard. There are six colour options for customers to choose from. The interior still boasts of a class leading 636mm rear leg-room which has been the Sunny’s USP.

Engines remain unchanged with the HR15 1.5-litre petrol available with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission while the K9K 1.5-litre diesel is available with a 5-speed manual only. Though performance isn’t sprightly, Nissan have tweaked the ECU for improved mileage claiming 16.95kmpl and 17.97kmpl for the manual and automatic variants respectively; 22.71kmpl being claimed efficiency for the diesel engine.

Kenichiro Yomura, MD, Nissan India said that the company expects the new car to contribute to 25 per cent sales in India. The Sunny became the most-selling entry-level mid-sized sedan in India when it was launched in 2011. Nissan is surely looking at regaining the title banking upon this substantially upgraded version.

Speaking on the occasion Chief Planning Officer, Nissan Motor Corp., Andy Palmer said “India is a key strategic growth market for Nissan. We continue to monitor its evolution extremely closely to ensure our expanding product portfolio fits regional needs. The new Sunny is our answer that responds to the changing demands and desires.”
