While talking about the new Ford Mustang, there is much more to discuss about its heritage compared to the technical innovations the iconic muscle car has brought to the world. While many sportscar manufacturers have showcased their engineering prowess with technologies like 4-wheel steering, active suspensions and hybrid powertrains, the 2015 Mustang is advertising its unique selling points on dusted technologies such as a push-to-start button and fully independent rear suspensions. That said, the 2015 Mustang will feature an “industry first,” active glovebox knee airbag system.

While knee airbag technology isn’t particularly new, as it was first implemented 18-years ago in the Kia Sportage, the active glovebox knee airbag system helps in reducing overall airbag weight and size over the standard kneebag. Where conventional airbags are made out of various kinds of fabric, the Mustang knee airbag uses an injection-moulded plastic bladder that sits sandwiched between the inner and outer panels of the glovebox.

In case of an impact, the crash sensor tells the inflator to fill the plastic bladder while the glovebox lid breaks free from its housing and extends towards the passengers legs. By doing this the new system is far more effective as it provides the same level of cushioning while the glovebox door helps in distributing the impact load over a larger surface area.

This new technology greatly reduces the overall airbag weight by 65 per cent and size by 75 per cent as compared to a standard kneebag. However, since the glovebox door flies off during deployment, we would highly recommend keeping your ex-girlfriend’s photos elsewhere while crashing in comfort with your current girlfriend besides you.
