Volvo has recently announced that it will join the Open Automotive Alliance and make the Android smartphone platform available to buyers through its new user interface. The level of Android smartphone integration will be phenomenal as it brings services familiar to Android users directly into the car courtesy of the touch screen display mounted on the central console.

“Google’s approach to user-centricity and the application of technology to improve peoples’ everyday lives makes Android Auto a perfect addition to the Volvo experience,” says Hakan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

The driver will be able to use Android Auto for Google Search, Google Maps, Google Play Music and specially adapted third party applications. Applications can be controlled via voice or steering-mounted controls or the car’s touchscreen ensuring the driver can access the applications in a safe manner and concentrate on the road.

Even iPhone users will have complete integration thanks to Apple CarPlay™ interoperability, where users can use either Android or Apple products hands-free. The touchscreen display has been integrated into the dashboard vertically and displays both, the car’s and Android Auto content on the screen simultaneously, eliminating the need to continuously shift between them.

Android Auto will feature on the all-new Volvo XC90 which will be unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.
