We like Audis here at TOD. We think they don’t get as much love as their other Teutonic peers and over time they’ve learned to make some really fun cars. We couldn’t be more delighted when we received the press release for the S5. Confused, but delighted just the same. The S5 is a mid-size sporty ‘sportback’. That is, it has a swoopy hatch instead of a boot, liberating more stowage area and creating a stance that can be polarising. Either way, there’s no doubting Audi’s claim that the S5 is the only vehicle in its segment in India.

Unlike BMW, that received its fair share of brickbats over the first 5-Series GT, Audi seems to have got the design right with the A/S/RS7 and this S5. The rear looks well-proportioned and works with the overall length of the car. To justify the ‘S’, you get a 3.0-litre V6 TFSI motor generating 333hp and 440Nm. Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel drive system is also present, receiving twist through a dual-clutch S tronic transmission. On the inside, there’s generous use of Aluminium and you can opt for S sport seats upholstered in Alcantara. Audi’s MMI Plus system is standard with 3D navigation, and you can play your tunes through a 14-speaker B&O sound system.

Audi’s drive select system is available too, which modulates the suspension, transmission, motor and steering feel depending on how belligerent you’re feeling on a particular day. Eight airbags are standard, should your belligerence turn to lunacy.

The new Audi S5 is avaiable for Rs 62,95,000 ex-showroom, Mumbai/Delhi and should be on your shopping list if you want something a little different in a sport sedan, without compromising on the practicality of space and comfort.
