BMW’s performance arm today decided to unveil the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M. The BMW X5 and X6 are essentially the same vehicle with different body styles. After a round of spy shots and a bunch of computer generated pictures floating around internet, the global premier of the new F85 X5 M and F86 X6 M will take place at the upcoming 2014 Los Angeles Motor Show.

The highlight for both vehicles, is the engine, the most powerful unit ever developed by BMW for an all-wheel-drive vehicle. The 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol is the same unit we are familiar with in the current M5 and M6 models. The V8 develops 564bhp at 6000–6500rpm in both the vehicles, which is 17bhp over the outgoing X5 M and X6 M. Peak torque has been boosted by 70 Nm, and is now 750Nm at 2200–5000rpm. The power is transmitted to all four wheels via a new 8-speed automatic transmission called M Steptronic, replacing the six-speed unit. The new engine and transmission combo means that they only take 4.2 seconds (0.3 second faster than outgoing models) to reach 100kmph, before hitting a 250kmph top speed.

The extra power from the new engine is complimented by the mean looking design which is more brutal and angular. The aggressive front design features a restyled front bumper, a revised grille, painted wheel arches, massive intakes, and aerodynamic side skirts. The models also boast of ventilated front fenders, and aerodynamic M-specific side mirrors. Typical M features, like quad exhausts tweaked bumpers at rear gives a distinctive look compared to their siblings. The fresh aura continues inside with newly designed leather-wrapped steering wheel, with aluminium paddle shifters. The instrument cluster has been revised, the sport seats come with fixed headrests, and an M-spec shifter are the major interior changes you will notice. Additionally, the new interior theme features contrast stitching, a four-zone automatic climate control system, and a Harman Kardon audio system. The new models also come with new optional 21-inch M wheels, and two new paint finishes.
