A defective fuel cap in the 2012–13 models of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Swift Dzire may prompt the manufacturer to recall up to 1 lakh units. The loose fuel cap can cause evaporation of fuel and the smell could filter into the cabin. Dealerships claim that Maruti hasn’t issued a recall notice as yet nor are they mandating extra checks on existing inventory but assert that the problem will not occur in the newer 2014 models.

If the notice is issued, it will not be the first time that Maruti has recalled cars. Dealersips have also confirmed problems with the steering column on the 2013 Swift, Swift Dzire, Ertiga and A-Star were rectified after a recall of 1,492 units. In February 2010, the largest recall by Maruti Suzuki took place which was the staggering recall of 1 lakh A-Stars that had a faulty fuel pump.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has initiated a voluntary recall policy since July 2012, which has convinced companies to recall their defective models. The largest recall in India took occured in August, 2012 when Ford recalled a whopping 1.28 lakh units of the Figo hatchback and Fiesta Classic sedan. Other examples of manufacturers who have adhered to the voluntary recall policy include Toyota’s 8,700 unit recall of the Corolla and Altis sedan in October 2012, the 7,016 unit recall of Renault’s Pulse and Scala in May 2013 and GM India’s enormous 1.14 lakh unit recall of the Tavera.

Priced between Rs 4.85–7.32 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) the Dzire plays the field against the Honda Amaze, Tata Indigo CS, Hyundai Xcent and the upcoming Tata Zest.
