The 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed had Jaguar showcase a one-off concept, the F-Type Project 7. There was plenty of interest that was generated for the supercar and Jaguar has announced that 250 units of this special edition will be built and sold. This development is, in part, thanks to Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Operations, which is the analogue of BMW’s M Division or Mercedes’ AMG. The division is run by Paul Newsome who worked with Williams, Lotus and had a hand in the development of the Formula E race cars. It is quite apparent, especially due to the rear tail fin, that the F-Type Project 7 is designed to pay tribute to the legendary D-Type.

The 250 hand-made units are a whole order of magnitude better than the standard F-Type even if the numbers don’t show this. Jaguar almost went back to the drawing board to make the Project 7 viable which has led to a lot of changes. Looks-wise, the D-Type inspired Project 7, is even meaner than its regular counterpart with a huge carbon fibre front air dam, reworked side sills and a revised rear wing. The windscreen has been lowered by 34mm and improves the aerodynamics of the supercar. The revised aero produces 177 per cent more downforce than the F-Type Convertible, at top speed.

The Project 7 has a tweaked version of the F-type R’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine which produces 567bhp (a 25bhp increase) and 680Nm of peak twisting force, making it the most powerful production Jaguar. The eight-speed transmission has also been reworked and enables the Project 7 to do 0–100kmph in 3.9 seconds and hit an electronically limited top whack of 300kmph. Weight reduction abounds with a significant portion being the electric roof mechanism which has been replaced by a simple fabric hood.
