We’re all rather used to the notifications we get on our smartphones asking us to update a specific application, which will have all the bugs fixed, and improve the efficiency of the app. It all gets done wirelessly with a couple of taps on a touchscreen. Now, imagine getting a little bit of a boost in your car without actually going to a workshop, or getting a tweaked ECU, or modding the crap out of it. Sounds a bit too futuristic, yes?

Enter Tesla, whose P85D has a whopping 1171Nm of torque coming in from the get-go, and already scares the pants off people. The sportier version of the all-electric sedan, that is now well known for leaving sportscars behind on the dragstrip, can now hit the ton mark 0.1 seconds sooner, thanks to a software update sent to all models of the car wirelessly.

Elon Musk, Founder, Tesla Motors, has spent the day (quite fruitfully I would imagine) tweeting about their new “over-the-air software update to the inverter algorithm”. This software update has been confirmed for the standard Model S (the 85kW version) as well, and increases performance correspondingly.

The Model S is an all-wheel drive car, thanks to the dual electric motors at the front and the rear, which is what helps deliver “Holy crap!” levels of acceleration. This, however, wasn’t the original intent. Continuing the series of tweets that were posted recently, Musk elaborated saying that “The main goal of the dual motor was actually insane traction on snow. Insane speed was a side effect.”

While the video below confirms that fact that the Model S P85D rules the snows, me thinks that actually labeling the button meant to take you even faster (beyond sport mode) as ‘Insane Mode’, is just something for the enthusiasts. And we sure are happy about that.
