Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) sold 1,91,883 units of its automatic scooter, Activa which has become the highest sold two-wheeler in the month of July. The increased sales also mark a year-on-year growth of 64 per cent from July ’13 to July’14. It is for the third time in the last 11 months that the Activa has achieved highest sales among all two-wheeler models sold in the country.

Speaking on the achievement, Yadvinder S. Guleria, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India said, “We are excited that Activa has once again become the highest selling two-wheeler of India. This is more significant since an automatic scooter displaced a motorcycle for numero uno position in Indian two-wheeler industry. This clearly indicates that Activa is exponentially getting acceptance as the most preferred choice of two-wheeler for commuting. In the last few years scooters have evolved and become more technologically advanced, fuel efficient and stylish. The high growth of Scooters in India has primarily been led by Honda and we are confident of maintaining this leadership in future.”

Ever since its launch in financial year 2001–02, the Activa had been the bread and butter model for the Japanese marque. The latest addition to its line-up, the Activa 125 also adds a major share to HMSI’s sales. HMSI currently has the capacity to produce 3.6 million motorcycles and plans to ramp-up production to 4.5 million by 2015–16. The entity is also planning on taking the crown from the current number one two-wheeler manufacturer and former ally, Hero Motocorp. Apart from the Manesar plant in Haryana, the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan and the latest unit in Narsapura, Kolar, Karnataka, the company is planning their fourth manufacturing unit which will shorten the journey to become the numero uno two-wheeler maker in India by 2020.
