Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), has launched its premium tourer, the Gold Wing in India, priced at Rs 28.5 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The Gold Wing Airbag will be available in a special pearl glare white finish at a price of Rs 31.5 lakh. The launch also coincides with the Gold Wing’s 40th anniversary in production.

This isn’t the first time Honda two wheelers has launched a premium bike, and it follows the CBU route that brought in bikes like the VFR1200F, and the CBR1000R. A first for Honda in India, and a first for any production bike, the tourer is powered by a six-cylinder 1832cc powerplant that develops 116bhp and 167Nm of peak torque. Braking dcuties are carried out by Honda’s Combined Braking System (CBS) in conjunction with an Antilock Braking System (ABS).

The lightweight and rigid twin-spar aluminium frame and single-sided pro-arm swingarm is meant to deliver stability and responsive handling, and helps to keep the weight relatively low at 400kg.

The premium touring bike gets a whole lot of features to keep you comfortable, commonplace for a bike this pricey, including five-position heated grips, independently adjustable heated seats and a foot-warming system. The panniers offered can hold up to 150 litres of luggage and the 6-speaker 80W SRS surround-sound system offers connectivity to an iPod, iPhone or USB stick.

Beyond the advanced braking system, safety features offered on the Gold Wing include a slow-speed, electric reverse system, and an electronic cruise-control system. A fully integrated airbag also features on the Gold Wing, but available only on the Gold Wing Airbag variant.

On this announcement Keita Muramatsu-President & CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, said, “We are excited to introduce one of the finest global offerings of Honda to India. We are celebrating 40 years of the Gold Wing and this model has given a new definition to touring. Ever since its introduction in 1975 the revolutionary Gold Wing has been the favourite of the touring enthusiast across the world. It was our customers’ passion for adventure and traveling the open road that really defined the Gold Wing and has further, led us to introduce the same in India.”

This is Honda’s foray into the luxury-touring segement and will be expected to take on the Indian Chieftain (Rs 33 lakh, ex-Delhi) and the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special (Rs 29.7 lakh ex-Delhi)
