The Hyundai Eon will soon get the Euro-spec i10’s 3-pot 1.0-litre petrol engine, after many months of persistent rumours. The micro hatchback could use a bit more power and a slightly larger engine will definitely help. Hyundai has had a soft launch of the Eon in Magna (mid) trim, which will come with the 998cc 3-cylinder petrol engine developing 65bhp at 5500rpm and 95Nm of torque at 3500rpm. The engine will be mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Dealerships have confirmed the existence and impending launch of the 1-litre Eon, but are yet to receive any cars or start bookings.

The 1.0-litre motor is expected be less efficient compared to the 23kmpl claimed for the 814cc engine. Performance figures should be in the same range as the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10, as both have similar power-to-weight ratios.

We expect the lower-spec DLite and Era variants to continue with the 814cc that produces 55bhp and 75Nm of torque. Neither the inside nor the outside of the 1.0-litre Eon Magna will see any changes compared to the standard model.

The Eon’s competitors: the Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R, Alto K10 and the recently introduced Datsun GO, all posses larger engines than the 814cc engine that the hatchback originally came with. The introduction of the larger engine will likely help sales of this already popular hatch and enable it to take the fight to its rivals. The 0.8-litre Eon is also offered with a factory-fitted LPG kit, though it seems unlikely that this will be offered on the 1.0-litre Eon.
