Hyundai reached a milestone in the hype cycle for its new small SUV, the Creta today, with an official launch in New Delhi. The unfortunately named Creta will go up against the Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano, among vehicles from Mahindra and others that overlap the price range. The Creta is available with three engines — a 121bhp, 1.6-litre petrol a frugal 89bhp, 1.4-litre diesel and a 126bhp, 1.6-litre diesel. The diesel will be available in an automatic variant, something of a rarity in the Indian marketplace. Hyundai claims that over 25% of its 15,000 bookings for the Creta are toward the diesel automatic variant. Manufacturers, take note.

There are ten variants on offer by Hyundai, with something for everybody. A large range of prices is available, all the way from 5.59 lac for the base petrol to 13.6 lac for the top-end diesel. Interestingly, the diesel automatic is only available in the SX+ variant, which means you give up side airbags. Thankfully, all variants do get ABS. The manual transmissions are all six-speeds, and the engines should feel familiar to Hyundai drivers.
