As we had reported earlier, Korean manufacturing giant Hyundai has commenced sales of its new 1.0-litre Eon, priced at Rs 3.83 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. Hyundai has transplanted the Euro-spec Grand i10’s 3-pot 998cc VTVT engine developing 68bhp at 6200rpm and 94Nm at 3500rpm into the Eon, bringing it up to speed with its rivals, the Wagon R and Datsun GO. As the engine has European roots, it is Euro 5 ready and has an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 20.3kmpl. Hyundai claims that the all-aluminium head and block reduces NVH levels considerably.

The 1.0-litre Eon will be sold in the Magna+ trim alongside the existing 814cc model. The Magna+ trim isn’t the top-of-the-line, but the 1.0-litre Eon features power steering, front power windows and an integrated 2DIN audio system with AUX and USB connectivity. It misses out on Bluetooth, alloy wheels and electrically adjustable ORVMs. There are no other mechanical or feature-related changes in the 1.0-litre Eon, and the engine is mated to the same five-speed manual transmission.

Commenting on the introduction of new engine variant, B. S. Seo, Managing Director and CEO, HMIL said, “Hyundai consistently innovates to meet and exceed the demands of the customer and the 1.0 Litre Kappa engine now offered in Eon is an extension of our modern-premium brand philosophy and will delight our customers with unparalleled driving experience and further consolidate Hyundai’s position in the domestic market.”

As the Magna+ variant of the 0.8-litre Eon costs just Rs 25,000 less than the 1.0-litre model, the new Eon makes is a very good value proposition, a specialty of Hyundai. The pricing of the car is also on-par with its competition: the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (Rs 3.49–4.34 lakh), the Datsun GO (Rs 3.12–3.7 lakh) and Maruti Suzuki’s Alto K10 (Rs 3.15–3.28 lakh). An LPG version of the new Eon has not been announced.
