Before the all-new Verna is comes next year, Hyundai India has launched an update for their mid-size sedan to keep it fresh. Hyundai has named the faelift the 4S Fluidic Verna, and the S’s stand for Style, Sophistication, Safety and Speed. Each of the updates on the new Verna revolve around these 4Ss. Prices start at Rs 7.73 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the base 1.4 VTVT variant and go all the way to Rs 12.19 lakh for the top-spec 1.6 CRDI AT.

Aside from that all-new nose, (including the the wing shaped grille, the boomerang shaped foglamps and the pulled back, stretched out headlamps) and a few minor changes to the rear styling (newly detailed tail-lamps and a hidden exhaust pipe), there are a few updates under the skin. Engineers at Hyundai have tweaked the suspension’s spring rates to make the Verna handle more predictably at speed and the bump stops now have an etched finish on them to help counter the thudding when the suspension bottoms out. New 16-inch diamond cut alloys are also on offer.

The cabin remains largely unchanged except for the front passenger seat getting a handle (like on VW’s Vento) so that rear passengers can slide the front seat forward to improve legroom. Equipment levels are typically Hyundai fare with Bluetooth connectivity, USB and aux-in ports, 1GB internal memory for music, driver’s seat height adjustment, tilt and telescopic steering, cooled glovebox, push-button start and keyless entry, climate control and a reverse camera, on offer. On the safety front, all variants now come with ABS, while top-spec trims come with six airbags, though the sedan’s NCAP rating of 5-stars is the most assuring bit.

Engine options have not changed and the Verna gets the 106bhp/135Nm 1.4-litre petrol, the 89bhp/220Nm 1.4-litre CRDI diesel, the 121bhp/155Nm 1.6-litre petrol, and the 126bhp/260Nm 1.6-litre diesel. The 1.6-litre motors come mated to an optional four-speed torque converter automatic while both petrol variants are paired with a five-speed manual. The diesels are mated to a six-speed manual.
