Remember that awesome but somewhat unrealistic Aston Martin Vanquish V12 James Bond drove in Die Another Day? It had ‘adaptive camouflage’ which rendered the car invisible to the naked eye thanks to an array of cameras which project what the camera sees into the space occupied by the Vanquish, earning it the moniker, Vanish.

British engineering has actually achieved it, albeit in a more realistic manner and for real world use. Land Rover’s new ‘see-through’ technology enables the driver to digitally look through the bonnet via cameras in the grille heads up display (HUD). This technology will aid greatly as the entire range of Land Rovers have long bonnets and their drivers have a penchant to drive it up slopes, normally reserved for mountain goats, in addition to helping during parking these behemoths. Not only will the driver be able to quite literally see through the bonnet to the ground, he will also be able to see the position of the tyres.

The ‘transparent’ hood will be on display at the New York International Motor Show incorporated into Land Rover’s new Discovery Vision Concept car.
