Maruti’s City-fighter got a hybrid boost today. The Ciaz SHVS is a mild hybrid vehicle that pairs regenerative braking, an “integrated starter generator” that can assist the engine electrically and a start-stop system with the internal combustion unit, the excellent 1.3 DDiS. The combination of technology enables the SHVS to claim over 28kmpl efficiency, up over the basic diesel Ciaz’s 26kmpl. The battery is also larger to support the additional electric systems. This makes the Ciaz SHVS India’s most fuel-efficient car.

More significant are the safety-related features the SHVS provides. A driver’s side airbag is standard across all variants, while a VDi (O) variant adds a passenger airbag as well. This is turning out to be a year where manufacturers take occupant safety seriously, with Hyundai and Ford taking the early lead with standard airbags. All this comes at a marginally lower price. Thanks to government subsidies on hybrid vehicles, Maruti has been able to drop prices of the diesel Ciaz slightly. The SHVS hybrid is now the only diesel model available, replacing the previous internal combustion-only model.
