All the speculation and rumors can now die down. The British supercar manufacturer, McLaren, has confirmed a new launch in the second quarter of 20105, which will be dubbed the McLaren Sports Series. Internally codenamed the P13, the new car has forgone the alphanumeric naming style currently followed at McLaren, and will slot in below the 650S in their line-up. McLaren states the new sportscar will offer the manufacturer’s engineering credentials and exclusivity to the sportscar segment for the first time, and will be a pure McLaren in every sense.

From the announcement, we can expect a sportscar that combines the credentials of the McLaren P1 and 650S, while bringing Formula 1 technologies and know-how to a new segment for the brand. Though technical and design information are yet to be divulged, the car will feature a carbon fibre chassis and a mid-mounted V8 engine.

The entry-level sportscar is expected to be McLaren’s answer to Jaguar’s F-Type, Porsche’s 911, and the Mercedes-AMG GT.

As part of the announcement, McLaren has released a video comparing the new car to a black swan. The voice over with the video states that people once thought all swans were white, until Dutch explorers discovered black swans in Western Australia in 1697. This discovery proved that sometimes, things are not always as we believe them to be. McLaren says the Sports Series will be the next “black swan”, bringing pure McLaren values to the sportscar class. The promise seems to be pretty big and now we have to wait and watch as to how the brand is going to live-up to expectations. Over the course of the coming weeks, McLaren Automotive will be using the hashtag #BlackSwanMoments to tell stories that have changed and challenged people’s beliefs.
