Michael Schumacher’s manager and spokesperson, Sabine Kehm has issued a statement saying that the German racer has come out of his coma and has left the hospital accompanied by his family. The legendary ex-Formula One driver had been in a medically induced coma since a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29 2013. The doctors had judged this move prudent to keep the seven-time champion’s brain from swelling due to the severity of the incident. No further details were divulged concerning the 45-year old’s condition.

Schumacher’s family has praised the hospital staff in Grenoble in the south-east of France, saying that they had done an “excellent job”. Kehm also stated that the remainder of Schumacher’s rehabilitation would take place at an undisclosed location, away from prying eyes.

Michael Schumacher is perhaps one of the most celebrated F1 drivers, with a record 91 race wins and 155 podium positions in his 17 year career.
