We’ve been waiting for this one since we drove it. The all-wheel-drive version of Renault’s compact SUV has finally been launched, with prices ranging from Rs 11.89 lakh for the RXL and Rs 12.99 lakh for the RXZ model. Besides the new AWD system, the new Duster also gets a come small cosmetic and interior updates.

The exterior changes on the Duster AWD include smoked alloy wheels and headlamps, matte black B-pillars, and ‘AWD’ and 4x4 badging. On the inside, it now gets a new three-pod instrument cluster, a new three-spoke steering wheel, dual-tone grey and red seats, and soft-touch plastics on the upper portion of the new dual-tone, and a black and grey dashboard.

Renault DUSTER AWD Launch

The most important part is of course the integration of the four wheel drive system which has required a new suspension, and changes to the architecture of the vehicle. The engine compartment has been revised to improve rigidity and make it better suited to off-roading. The electricals and electronics have been revised to the same effect as well. Like most modern SUVs, the Duster AWD gets a rotary dial on the centre console that allows you to choose between three driving modes — 2WD, Auto and 4WD lock mode. In Auto, the system sends power to all four wheels depending on the terrain and current requirements.

The AWD version gets all-wheel independent multi-link suspension as opposed to the 2WD Duster’s non-independent torsion beam set-up, a first in the class. Ground clearance for the AWD stands at 210mm.

The engine is the same as before — Renault’s tried and tested 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel dubbed the K9K, which produces 108bhp and 248Nm of torque. The six-speed manual transmission is the same as before, but the first gear is shorter, to avoid slippage of the clutch and thus extend clutch life, and also make driving in tricky conditions easier.
