While bookings for Tata’s new hatchback, sibling of the Zest compact sedan, and the second car from the Indian manufacturer’s Horizonext project, the Bolt, had been announced exactly a month ago (for Rs 11,000), Tata has launched the Bolt for Rs 4.4 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi.

As with the Zest, the Bolt will come with the same trims, with the exception of the XMSA F-Tronic, as the diesel Bolt won’t be launched with the automated manual transmission. Tata has given the Bolt hatchback an impressive features list as even the base variant gets ORVM mounted indicators, alloy wheels, central locking, gear shift indicator and power steering. Except for the base XE trim, all other variants ABS (Bosch’s 9th generation ABS) and rear power windows. The top-spec XMS and XT variants get dual front airbags as well, making the Bolt XMS the most affordable car in the segment with ABS and airbags. Tata Motors has also teamed-up with Harman for developing the touchscreen infotainment system, with MapMyIndia for smartphone based navigation, which can also provide other location based services.

Available in both petrol and diesel, the Bolt petrol will be powered by the 1.2-litre turbocharged engine christened as Revotron 1.2T, with a power output of 89bhp and peak torque of 140Nm. The car also features driving different modes such as Sport, City, Eco modes, a possible USP for this vehicle. The diesel variant comes with a 74bhp 1.3-litre quadrajet engine, delivering 190Nm of torque. To know how it drives, check out our quick drive report.

Tata will expect the Bolt to perfom the same way its compact sedan sibling, the Zest, did though in the hatchback’s case, its rivals are more well established. The Fiat Punto Evo (starting at Rs 4.7 lakh ex-Mumbai), Hyundai’s Elite i20 (priced at Rs 5.1 lakh), and VW’s Polo (costing Rs 5.2 lakh), all cost a bit more than the Bolt, a USP Tata has always managed to provide. Based on our review and the prices, the hatchback does offer quite a good value for money proposition.
