Spread across 603 acres, Tata Motors’ Jamshedpur facility is celebrating 60 years of truck manufacturing this year. Situated in the state of Jharkhand, Tata Motors utilises this facility to manufacture trucks, cabins, multi-axle trucks, tractor-trailers, and tippers for medium and heavy commercial (M&HCV) vehicles for both civilian and defence customers. Started with the manufacturing of steam locomotives 1945, the company forayed in to truck manufacturing in 1954 and now boasts of state-of-art equipment and the assembly line produces a truck every five minutes. The facility assembles over 200 M&HCV models and rolled out two-millionth commercial vehicle last year.

The Jamshedpur plant also houses the engineering research centre that played a pivotal role in the conceptualisation and integration of the Prima and the Prima LX, Tata’s new generation truck family. The engine assembly shop is capable of supplying up to 300 engines per day. The body shop facility has been robotized and works on track lines rather than a conveyer belt system for precision, accuracy and to save time. To test the trucks for reliability, the plant has a natural off-road track and a test track which is arguably the first in India. The Jamshedpur facility is also the hub for the TML Drivelines Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors engaged in the manufacture of gear boxes and axles for heavy and medium-duty commercial vehicles.
