As if cars that can blitz past the ton mark in under 3 seconds weren’t extreme enough, both McLaren and Ferrari are expected to create ‘track-only’ versions of their hypercars, the P1 and the LaFerrari respectively. Apparently, McLaren had recently sent letters to all 378 owners of the 904bhp P1 asking if they would be interested in owning a track-only version of the hypercar. The letter is in response to a few customers asking the British racing marque for just that.

Technical specifications are unknown at the moment, though we expect the track-spec version will feature more aggressive and extreme body work to enhance the hypercar’s aerodynamic performance on track. The suspension set-up will be locked in the lowest position unlike the road car which has an adjustable set-up. There is a high possibility that the hybrid motor will be massaged to produce more than the current 904bhp and 900Nm of torque. Expect acceleration times to improve by a few tenths of a second and the handling characteristics to reach a whole new level.

Fans and owners of the Ferrari Enzo were elated to see an even madder track-spec version, the FXX, of the hypercar and the Italian manufacturer is expected to do the same for its eponymous hypercar, the LaFerrari. Unlike McLaren, Ferrari may not be looking at bumping up output figures and would concentrate on improving the handling of the LaFerrari. There are also rumours that the track-spec LaFerrari will be merged with Ferrari’s Formula One-derived 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 hybrid powerplant which has a combined output of 760bhp. Weight reduction will also take place in the same process that enabled the FXX to shed almost 100kg over the Enzo. Meanwhile, the ‘regular’ La Ferrari is endowed with a 6.3-litre V12 internal combustion motor combined with a 160bhp electric mill which develops a combined 950bhp.

Unfortunately, these cars won’t be visible on the road anywhere in the world as these tack-only versions are not road legal. The track-spec hypercars will only be offered to current owners of the ‘normal’ versions and these beasts will be cared for by the manufacturers. The owners will be allowed to take the car for a spin on the track or to move the hypercar to a different track but beyond that, the manufacturers will keep the cars.

The only name missing from this mash-up is the German giant, Porsche who unveiled its latest technology packed hypercar, the 918, earlier this year. The 918 is one of few cars that has the heritage to go toe-to-toe with the McLaren P1 and the LaFerrari though it loses out on outright power. The German manufacturer hasn’t officially announced a track-only version though it may be available in the coming years.
