This new GT really does showcase Ford’s racing intentions at Detroit. The American manufacturer has added the letter ‘R’ to the Mustang Shelby GT350 name, and the car is to be the most track-ready road-going production Mustang, ever built.

Thanks to innovations in aerodynamics, chassis engineering and light-weight construction, Ford claims this Mustang packs never-before-seen track capability. Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development explains, “The Shelby GT350R Mustang is a no-compromise car in the pursuit of maximum track capability. It is a thoroughbred street car making use of technology and ingenuity to deliver performance few enthusiasts have ever experienced.”

Power comes from a flat-plane crank, 5.2-litre V8 — contrasting with the Mustang’s more traditional crossplane crank. The new engine should generate a minimum of 500hp. This will be mated to a chassis boasting magnetic ride suspension and is 58kg lower in terms of weight than the standard GT350. A specially tuned limited-slip Torsen differential with 3.73 axle ratios is optimized for cornering grip and straight-line traction, while an electronically modulated rear-mounted air-to-oil differential cooler has been installed to maintain temperatures during track driving.

Ford has given special emphasis to the aerodynamics in the making of the Shelby GT350R Mustang. The enhancements include a hood vent for heat extraction and lift reduction, underbody belly pans, front and rear diffusers, vented wheel wells, fender vents, wheel air curtains, and side skirts. The car boasts of carbon fibre wheels as a weight saving measure, making Ford the first major automaker to introduce this as standard equipment. The larger front splitter and rear wing feature distinct design details. Exterior touches include red painted brake calipers, a red pin striping at the edges of the optional over-the-top racing stripes, and Shelby GT350R badging. Inside is contrast red stitching, Shelby GT350R badging, and the flat-bottom steering wheel.

This is a track spec Mustang, and Ford has gone to extremes trying to shed weight. Omissions include the air-condition system, stereo, back seat, trunk floorboard and liner, backup camera and emergency tyre sealer and inflator. Also removed for weight saving, and aiding to bring forth a raucous exhaust are the resonators. However, for customers seeking more comfort in their Shelby GT350R, Ford is offering an optional electronics Package. Included is dual-zone air conditioning, an 8-inch touch screen with navigation, seven-speaker audio system, turn signal integrated into the mirrors, and more. The limited-production Shelby GT350R will be available in the United States and Canada later this year though prices are yet to be divulged.
