Hot hatch lovers, it’s the time to pull your pennies together and move abroad. Volkswagen has confirmed the production version of the Golf R 400 concept that stormed the Beijing Motor Show last year. According to VW Group powertrain chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser words, “Soon we will have the Golf R 400 — we will do this car. We are in fact in development right now.”

The Golf R 400 concept has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit developing 395bhp (400PS) making the maddest version of the Golf yet, bar the W12 Golf concept (seriously, what were they thinking). The 2.0-litre four-pot engine is the same one used across the VW Group range including some Audis and Skodas, though it has been thoroughly retuned to produce a massive 395bhp at 7200rpm and 450Nm between 2400 and 6000rpm. The production version is also expected to carry the same figures. All the power and torque is delivered via VW’s six-speed DSG to four wheels using the patented 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The concept needs just 3.7 seconds to 100kmph which is supercar rivaling, and reaches a claimed top whack of 325kmph.

Apart from the bigger heart, Volkswagen is not interested in giving a sinister, over-the-top look to this new Golf. Following the tradition of the Golf GTI and Golf R, the R 400 will also come with minimalist design. However, a new aerodynamic kit will differentiate this model. Once in production, the R 400 will lock horns against the AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz A 45, developing 355bhp from its 2-litre four cylinder motor. The production model is rumored to be unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt motor show and deliveries are expected to begin in 2016. We are not expecting Golf R 400 in India, no matter how much we would like it. So if you want one and you have the money, like we said in the beginning, it’s time for you to mull over moving abroad.
