Japan is notorious for bizzare and funny advertsiments with everything from a man dressed in a banana costume with bananas coming out of his nose, to talking dogs flying in hot air balloons. Toyota Asia Pacific lives up to the funny ad coming from Japan theme and has released one earlier this month which stars a bunch of Japanese businessmen, a gorilla, tarzan and his harem, and some jungle natives. A drive through a jungle, accompanied by some pretty funny lyrics (even by Japanese standards), in the Toyota Hilux pick-up truck (not sold in India) gets interupted when the lead driver needs to empty his bladder. Yes, that is how the commercial starts with hilarity continuing after as more of the star cast join in the Psy style chorus dance sequence.

With this ad Toyota intends to shed the boring car image that its vehicles seem to possess. The Waku-Doki line (used as the chorus) means ‘heart racing/adrenaline pumping’, has been used in India as well with good results. Virat Kohli (on-foot) racing a TRD-kitted Etios has brought plently of crooked smiles to faces. The world over, Toyota is trying hard to shatter its image as a stoic budget car maker so that buyers wouldn’t look down their noses at sportscars and luxury sedans offered by the company.

This ad may be a step too far in that direction, considering that a pick-up truck has been used to try and convey excitement. Maybe next time Toyota could actually showcase its TRD line-up. Or may be they could stay true to the Japanese theme of making rib-tickling ads, I know which I prefer.
