I had no idea you could even be this strong or coordinated… but that is a general sentiment that I get every time I watch Shauna Coxsey (GBR) climb.

Shauna Coxsey (GBR; in the video above) ended up in second place at the 2017 Munich World Cup this weekend after being pipped out of first by none other than 18-year-old, comp climbing phenom, Janja Garnbret(SLO) on the final problem. The problems in the final round were really fun to watch, and they were climbed by six bouldering LEGENDS of the women’s division. Along with Ganbret, the top 6 competitors at the 2017 Munich Bouldering World Cup included current IFSC Boulder World Champion, Petra Klingler(SUI); 3x Overall World Cup champion, Noguchi Akiyo (JPN); 2x current Overall World Cup champion, Shauna Coxsey (GBR); 2017 World Games gold medalist, Staša Gejo (SRB), and; 10x American Bouldering National Champion (and pretty much one of the strongest/most-ripped people I have ever seen climb), Alex Puccio (USA). The women’s division is LIT right now.

Coxsey also finished the season defending her 2016 Overall World Cup Champion title; a massive feat given that she received surgery for a shoulder injury she sustained in this competition in Munich, this time last year. Following her rehab and her successes has been inspirational!

Stasa Gejo, of Serbia

To add to pretty much the weirdest World Cup ever, the semifinals of this competition doubled as the European Championship titles. If that wasn’t already dramatic enough, a three-way tie occurred for first place in semis/European Championships between Garnbret, Gejo and Noguchi. I have literally never seen this happen at a Boulder World Cup before, and a SUPER FINAL was necessary to break the tie between Garnbret and Gejo (Noguchi, of JPN, did not qualify for the European championships).

GEJO (pictured above) won the tie-breaker and was crowned the European Bouldering Champion! So in quite a weird turn of events, Garnbret did better than Gejo in the World Cup competition by winning the entire thing, but Gejo is the European champion since she did better in semis. Yeah, my brain hurts too.

Congratulations to Jan Hojer (GER), who performed out of his skin in front of a home crowd to not only defend his European Championship title for 2017 but also WIN the Munich World Cup competition in the men’s division. Congrats also to Chon Jongwon (KOR) who took out the Men’s Overall World Cup Champion title. Finally, I wanted to say well done and congratulations to local Brisbane climber, Lucy Stirling (AUS) for her massive efforts training and competing in this year’s World Cups!

I am super excited to follow next year’s season and to find out what stories come out of the 2018 circuit. In the meantime, I’ll be following the lead circuit (is it worth mentioning that Garnbret has won every lead world cup this season with victories in Villars (SUI), Chamonix (FRA) and Briancon (FRA)? Janja is also the reigning IFSC Lead World Champion, and she and her boyfriend, Domen Škofic (both of Slovenia), both won the overall Lead World Cup Champion titles in their respective divisions for 2016. Also she is 18!!!!).

The OUTDOOR STOKE will also be high as competitors take time off and get to climb outside again. Yay climbing!

Here is the replay of the entire finals rounds for both the men’s and women’s divisions. Enjoy!
