A Modern-Day Affliction
Why are you seeking more out of your life? Come on — I know you are — otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this.
Here’s my two cents…
We are products of an increasingly consumerist, materialistic, selfie and social media obsessed world which is nearly impossible to avoid as it beckons seductively to us from every corner. The endless advertising and images distract us from our own paths and leave us questioning ourselves or desiring other people’s seemingly brilliant lives. In simple terms, and most cruelly, this stimulus is roughly all the same ilk which boils down to leaving us feeling one of or all the below:
- I’m not good enough
- I’m not pretty enough
- I’m not rich enough
- I’m not thin enough
- I’m not clever enough
- I’m not a tech entrepreneur enough
- I’m not fun enough
- I’m not creative enough
The list goes on and on — enough already!
This leaves us with an overarching sense of lack. A perception and feeling of not having enough. Coupled with a consuming appetite for wanting more. We buy into the “I haven’t got this” or “I haven’t got that” and then focus on the not so good rather than the great parts of our lives. Many of us then become frustrated observers of other people’s awesome looking life experiences.
The catch is — this may or may not be reflective of their truth or the facts of their lives. When in reality, it doesn’t matter, it really doesn’t matter what anyone else is doing. What matters is how you think about it, what meaning you assign to it, how you let it make you feel and how you then go about living your own life.
