Burnout Busters: 5 Tactics That Helped Me Build a Business in 6 Weeks
Burnout is real and should not be ignored. The only way to recognize it, for most of us, is to be on the edge of it. While this is unfortunate, you can notice the early signs AND do something about it if you have a steady routine. Here are five tactics I used to build a business in six weeks.
Summer is almost here and that’s the perfect time to take on a side-hustle. A side-hustle is a freelance or contract gig used to pad your bank account or help you launch a full-time entrepreneurial endeavor.
Why is summer the best time to do this?
Well, for starters, the days are longer. Ok, there may not be more hours in the days, but the days ARE longer. The later the sun sets, the more time you have for work and play.
Many of us are also lucky enough to have summer fridays and that is how I built my business.
It may seem simple — use the time you have off from your full-time gig to work on your passion project and, for the most part, it was. The one thing I wasn’t prepared for? Burnout!
As a veteran of the communications field, I knew what burnout felt like — I had worked as a cub reporter at Patch.com where burnout truly was a badge of honor — and I was surprised to feel the familiar tickle of it when I started building my digital agency in the summer of 2015.
I knew that in order to be successful, I’d have to banish that burnout stat and here’s how I did it.
Exercise: A hardcore, quick workout has always been my jam. SoulCycle gives me the time I need to not only feel great but also to solve problems and create the mental space I need to battle burnout. It allows me to dream, meditate and breath all in one quick hit. Exercise is often the first thing to get chucked off the to-do list when you’re busy but it is actually the ONE thing you should fit for more than anything else.
Up and Out: As an entrepreneur who works from home (and enjoys it!), I can tell you it IS important to change venues sometimes. Schedule at least 2–4 coffee dates per week this summer. Make two professional and two for fun — you’ll be surprised to see how many of the “for fun” conversations become professional.
Self-Care: This is something we talk about in general terms but never really get to the heart of. What does the overarching term “self-care” really mean? That’s the thing, it means something different for everyone. For you, it could mean time with your kids or spouse. For me, it’s walks in Riverside Park and actually blocking out time to date. Make at least 3–5 appointments with yourself each week that are in the self-care bucket in order to banish burnout this summer.
Passion Projects: My field is one that has many, many areas to tap into it. That’s why I chose this field — you’ll never get bored in digital media marketing and communications, there’s just too much to touch on! If your field is not as creative, find a side-hustle that allows your passions to shine. The risk here is dreading what you used to love so make sure you’re still blocking time to do these things just because, not because they’re making you money. For example, if you’re an artist selling paintings, make sure you’re still blocking time to create paintings for the pure joy it brings you.
Pay Down Debt: Money is something we also talk around. Let’s hit this one headon — money IS a cause of burnout and obsessive thoughts around your finances can be a sign of burnout. The way I solve this is to realistically review what’s coming in, what’s going out and what I need to do in the next 30, 60 and 90 days to stay on track. By paying down debt, I allow my mind to be free for creative pursuits AND allow myself the space to network thereby finding more opportunities and opening up more channels for client conversion.
Burnout is avoidable if you know your triggers and how to calm yourself when you come up against one.
